The American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting 2024, the world’s largest earth science conference, was held from December 9 to 13 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington D.C. With over 31,000 scientists and students from around the world in attendance, this year’s meeting marked the largest gathering in the event’s history.

AGU Fall Meeting is an annual global event that highlights the latest research and innovations in earth science while addressing critical issues such as climate change, energy resources, and geological hazards. This year’s meeting was particularly significant, taking place in Washington D.C., the headquarters of AGU, and received greater attention than ever before.

The 2024 meeting featured an impressive 4,150 presentations across multiple formats, including:

• Plenary Sessions: 8

• Oral Presentations: 1,061

• In-Person Poster Sessions: 1,147

• Online Poster Sessions: 1,654

• eLightning Sessions: 114

In addition, the event hosted 115 town halls, 15 pre-conference workshops, and 36 AGU learning sessions.

The event’s success was supported by 134 AGU staff members, along with external partners and Washington D.C. community resources. Companies like Maritz (for meeting coordination), Astrea (for security and emergency preparedness), and local hotels, restaurants, and transportation providers contributed to the seamless execution of the conference.

“It’s astonishing how smoothly everything ran despite the sheer size of this conference,” commented one attendee. The AGU Fall Meeting 2024 was praised for its flawless organization, offering participants a well-coordinated, satisfying experience. Many commended the comfortable venue and the variety of sessions available, describing the conference as an exceptional academic gathering.

This year’s event highlighted the active participation of young researchers and students, who took center stage in poster sessions, networking events, and collaborative discussions. These opportunities allowed the next generation of earth scientists to connect globally and showcase their work. “I gained not only academic inspiration but also valuable new collaborations,” said a student participant.

Washington D.C.’s local community played a vital role in the success of the event. Hotels, restaurants, and transportation services supported the attendees, offering a warm and welcoming experience. This collaboration between the scientific community and the city highlighted how local infrastructure and hospitality can enhance major global events.

The AGU Fall Meeting 2024 once again proved its value as more than just a scientific conference. It served as a critical platform for connecting the global earth science community and fostering discussions to address worldwide challenges. The next AGU Fall Meeting is scheduled to take place in New Orleans in December 2025.
