On October 23, 2025, Shumei University hosted a special lecture titled “Malaysia Truly Asia.” The event featured Mr. Jeffry Meyer, First Secretary at the Embassy of Malaysia in Japan, and was organized by Dr. Wonsuh Song (Faculty of Teacher Education, Shumei University).
Mr. Jeffry described Malaysia as “a model of multicultural coexistence and a nation that truly represents Asia’s diversity,” offering an overview of the country’s history, ethnic composition, religions, education, and culture, as well as its relationship with Japan. Using vivid visuals and examples, he provided students with a deeper understanding of Malaysia’s multicultural society.
The session concluded with the screening of the “Visit Malaysia 2026” promotional video, followed by an interactive quiz in which many students participated enthusiastically. Winners received Malaysian specialty products and souvenirs, and during the Q&A session, students asked insightful questions about Malaysia’s education system, religion, and cultural coexistence.
Following the lecture, the Embassy of Malaysia at Tokyo donated seven Islamic prayer mats and three copies of the Quran—in English, Arabic, and Japanese—to support Muslim students at Shumei University. The donation was made to provide a welcoming space where Muslim students can comfortably and freely perform their prayers on campus. The Embassy expressed its hope to “help foster an inclusive environment that respects cultural and religious diversity.”
Dr. Wonsuh Song commented, “Through this lecture and the embassy’s meaningful donation, students were able to experience Southeast Asia’s diversity and the spirit of coexistence firsthand. It was a valuable opportunity that will further promote multicultural understanding at Shumei University.”
