Waseda University School of Education Hosts Special Lecture “Malaysia Truly Asia”

[Tokyo | Japan] On October 21, 2025, the School of Education at Waseda University held a special lecture titled “Malaysia Truly Asia” at the Waseda Campus. The event featured Mr. JEFFRY MEYER, First Secretary at the Embassy of Malaysia in Tokyo, and was organized by Dr. Wonsuh Song.

In his lecture, Mr. Jeffry described Malaysia as “a model of multicultural coexistence and a nation that truly represents Asia’s diversity.” He gave a comprehensive overview of Malaysia’s history, ethnic composition, religions, education system, culture, and relations with Japan, emphasizing that “harmony among different communities and faiths is the foundation of Malaysia’s strength and progress.”

The lecture also explored Malaysia’s diverse food culture—nasi lemakchicken rice, and roti canai—as well as its natural and historical attractions such as the rainforests of Borneo and the historic city of Melaka. Mr. Jeffry highlighted Malaysia’s role as “an educational hub in Southeast Asia,” noting that “the country has more than 90 universities and several foreign branch campuses, including Tsukuba University’s campus in Malaysia.”

He also discussed the Look East Policy initiated by former Prime Minister Mahathir in the 1980s, which has fostered long-standing cooperation between Malaysia and Japan in education, technology, and culture.

As the 2025 ASEAN Chair, Malaysia is taking a leading role in promoting regional peace and economic integration. Mr. Jeffry mentioned that “the ASEAN Summit will be held in Kuala Lumpur on October 26, with leaders from Japan, the United States, China, and India expected to attend.”

The session concluded with a screening of the “Visit Malaysia 2026” promotional video, followed by a quiz in which winners received Malaysian specialty products and souvenirs. Students also learned basic Malay greetings and expressions, deepening their understanding of Malaysia’s multicultural society.

Dr. Song remarked that “this lecture provided students with a valuable opportunity to experience ASEAN’s diversity firsthand and to reflect on the meaning of coexistence in a globalized world.”
